Rider training

Trial Riding School with a Champion

Two to four hours one-on-one with Czech trial champion Martin Matějíček in Dolní Čermná. Trial is the hardest school of balance there is, and after it your own bike suddenly feels light and obedient.

Who it is for

  • Riders who want to transform their balance and low-speed control
  • Owners of big adventure bikes, because trial technique is the piece most riders are missing off-road
  • Complete beginners and children, since you need no licence for a trial bike

What to expect

Martin Matějíček is the Czech national trial champion. He can hold a motorcycle still on the spot, turn it inside the length of a boot and ride it up a rock you could not climb on foot. More importantly, he can teach it, and he teaches only you: the training is entirely one-on-one.

Why trial

You do not need trial for anything, right up to the moment you realise it is the fastest way there is to learn to control a motorcycle. A trial bike has no seat, so there is nowhere to hide. Either you control it with your body, the throttle and the clutch, or you stop. There is no third option.

A few hours in Dolní Čermná change how you ride your big bike. Filtering at walking pace, turning round on a narrow lane, hill starts, picking your way around an obstacle off-road: all of it is trial technique, just in heavier packaging.

Do not worry about being out of your depth

A trial bike weighs a fraction of your enduro and is ridden slowly. There is no speed here to frighten you. You need no licence, because we ride in a closed park, and children come regularly.

Martin speaks English, so international riders get the same coaching as everyone else. Dolní Čermná is in eastern Bohemia, about two and a half hours from Prague, which makes it an easy addition to any motorcycle training trip in the Czech Republic.

Itinerary

  1. Start

    Meeting the trial bike

No seat, almost no weight, and it reacts to every movement you make. For the first few minutes it will feel as though you never learned to ride at all.

  2. Block 1

    Stance and balance

Standing still without putting a foot down. It sounds like a party trick until you try it. Everything else is built on top of it.

  3. Block 2

    Throttle and clutch

Clutch control measured in millimetres, throttle in percentages. This is the skill you take straight back to your GS.

  4. Block 3

    Obstacles

Logs, steps, rocks. Not with brute force but with timing, and Martin shows you how to make it look effortless.

  5. Block 4

    Sections

You link the obstacles into a short section and ride it. Without a foot down, if you can manage it.

  6. Wrap-up

Taking it back to the big bike

Exactly which parts of trial you will use on an enduro or a big touring bike.

FAQ

What is the minimum age?

You can come to our training and experience rides without a driving licence. The youngest participant of our week-long camp was 11 years old. A licence follows the statutory age limits (A2 from 18, unrestricted A from 24, or from 20 after two years on A2).

Can I manage it if I have never sat on a motorcycle?

Yes. Most people start with us from zero. We begin on a light bike on soft ground, where a fall costs nothing, and build up from there. No previous experience is needed.

Do I need a driving licence?

For off-road training, for the closed race track and for experience rides you do not need a licence, because we ride away from public roads. You only need one where we go out on the road (road tours and expeditions).

Can I hire a motorcycle from you?

Yes. We have the largest BMW test fleet in the Czech Republic and bike hire is part of most courses and expeditions. All bikes are insured with a minimal excess. You are also welcome to come on your own machine.

Do you lend me a motorcycle, or do I have to bring my own?

It differs from service to service. Experience rides: we lend the bikes, you go through five of them during the ride. Off-road training: 5 500 CZK on your own bike, 8 800 CZK with our BMW. Weekend off-road training: 13 000 CZK on your own, 18 000 CZK with our BMW. Private race track training: you ride your own motorcycle, ours can be arranged in advance for an extra charge. Private off-road training: bike hire is included. Expeditions: the bike and all fuel are included.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothing for the weather, sturdy boots and a willingness to learn. We lend you the protective kit: helmet, gloves, body armour, knee guards and boots.

How much does it cost?

The fixed prices: experience ride on the track and off road 8 899 CZK · off-road training 5 500 CZK on your own bike, 8 800 CZK with our BMW · weekend off-road training 13 000 CZK, or 18 000 CZK with our BMW · private race track training 3 hours for 10 000 CZK, 6 hours for 15 000 CZK · week-long camp 60 000 CZK · tailor-made expedition from 59 000 CZK · motorcycle hire in Spain 4 500 CZK a day. As a rough guide, 25 CZK is about 1 EUR. For the other services the price depends on the date and the option, so write to us and we will send it straight back.

Do I need my own riding kit?

No. On our courses we lend you a helmet, gloves, body armour, knee guards and riding boots. If you have your own kit, bring it. On experience rides protectors are lent by prior arrangement for an extra 500 CZK (approx. 20 EUR).
