What to expect
Escape to Freedom is the one expedition where the motorcycle is the star. The BMW R 18 has an 1800 cc boxer, the largest BMW has ever built. Add feet-forward pegs, chrome and enough torque to ride most of the day in a single gear. It is not a machine for rushing. It is a machine for long arcs, warm tarmac and a view of the ocean.
Portugal might have been designed for it. The coast roads are long, well surfaced and empty, a village turns up every ten kilometres, and you drink your coffee looking out at the Atlantic. Nobody here is in a hurry, so neither are you.
Riding an R 18 for half an hour at a dealership is one thing. Spending five days with it, covering a thousand kilometres and finding out how it behaves in the cold of the morning and at thirty degrees in the afternoon, is quite another. That is the whole reason this expedition exists.
There are never more than six riders, and one instructor looks after four at most. On a cruiser, though, what gets tuned is the route and the pace rather than your technique. You can choose between the BMW R 18 Pure, Classic, Bagger and Transcontinental plus, and swap machines with the instructor or among yourselves during the week. Our instructors speak English.
What is and is not in the price
The price covers bike hire and all fuel, the guide and instructor, the support vehicle (your bags are waiting at the hotel) and the side programme: the port cellar, the spa and the surf lesson.
Flights, accommodation and meals are not included, though we are happy to arrange all of it. Accommodation runs to €80 per person per night in a single room, €40 in a shared one.
Itinerary
Arrival in Porto and the port cellar
You fly into Porto, and on that first evening we head straight for a famous port cellar.
R 18 handover and the first stage
Breakfast around nine, luggage into the support vehicle, and you pick your cruiser. Then a full day on the road, with a stop for lunch and dinner together in the evening.
A ride and the side programme
A prepared route on Portuguese roads plus the side programme. If you prefer, spend the day at the spa and ride out on your own later.
The long stage
After breakfast, a route of roughly 250 km. The 1800 cc boxer pulls from idle, so there is no hurrying and not much shifting.
Surfing the Atlantic
An optional morning ride, then a surf lesson in the Atlantic, run by our instructor Dušan, who also teaches at a surf school.
Over to Lisbon
The last stage, into Lisbon, where the expedition ends. Portuguese cooking along the way.
Flight home
After breakfast we take you to the airport. Photos and video from the whole trip land in a shared gallery.

What is included in the price of an expedition?
Hire of an insured motorcycle (you can swap bikes with the instructors along the way), all fuel, the instructors and airport transfers both ways. Flights, accommodation and meals are not included, but we are happy to arrange them for you. Most expeditions last 6 days (4 riding days), the Portuguese ones 7 days, and Spain can also be ridden as 8 days.
What is not included in the price of an expedition?
Flights, accommodation and meals. Budget for them on top; we are happy to arrange all of them, but they are paid separately. What you do get in the price is hire of an insured motorcycle, all fuel, the instructors and airport transfers both ways.
Do I have to find accommodation for the expedition myself?
No, we arrange it for you, it is simply paid separately. As a rough guide, reckon on about 80 EUR per person per night in a single room and 40 EUR in a shared one, and about 40 and 20 EUR on Spain and Portugal. We confirm the exact price when you book, as it varies with the destination and the date.
How demanding are the expeditions?
We build the routes around the level of the group. We ride at the pace of the slowest rider and nobody is pushed. Previous off-road experience is not needed; riders who have only ever been on tarmac manage perfectly well.
Can I manage an expedition without any off-road experience?
Yes, no experience is needed, we teach you everything. All you need is a motorcycle licence. We adapt the routes to your wishes and riding level. Our expeditions have been ridden by a man who had just passed his test, by a woman with zero off-road experience and by an 11-year-old beginner.
How long does an expedition last?
A standard expedition lasts 6 days, of which 4 are riding days. For Spain, and for Spain with Portugal, you can also choose the longer 8-day version (6 riding days). The Portuguese expeditions (Euphoria, Freedom) last 7 days, of which 5 are riding days.
Can I hire a motorcycle from you?
Yes. We have the largest BMW test fleet in the Czech Republic and bike hire is part of most courses and expeditions. All bikes are insured with a minimal excess. You are also welcome to come on your own machine.
Do you lend me a motorcycle, or do I have to bring my own?
It differs from service to service. Experience rides: we lend the bikes, you go through five of them during the ride. Off-road training: 5 500 CZK on your own bike, 8 800 CZK with our BMW. Weekend off-road training: 13 000 CZK on your own, 18 000 CZK with our BMW. Private race track training: you ride your own motorcycle, ours can be arranged in advance for an extra charge. Private off-road training: bike hire is included. Expeditions: the bike and all fuel are included.
